August 9, 20241. Nature of the Test
The first fundamental difference lies in the nature of these three tests – PTE, IELTS, and TOEFL. PTE Academic is completely computer-based, TOEFL is primarily computer-based with some paper-based testing in non-digital areas, while IELTS can be either computer-based or paper-based, depending on the type you choose.
Given this distinction, your decision may depend on your comfort with technology – for those who are more comfortable typing than writing by hand, PTE Academic and TOEFL may be the better options.
2. Test format
The second difference is visible in the format of each test. PTE Academic consists of three sections – speaking and writing (combined), listening, and reading. While, IELTS and TOEFL are divided into four sections – speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
Because it has a combined speaking and writing section, PTE Academic may be the preferable option for people who are more comfortable with these two skills combined. However, if having separate sections would suit you more, consider IELTS and TOEFL.
3. Scoring Scale
PTE Academic uses an automated scoring software, TOEFL uses a numerical scoring (0-120) and IELTS uses a 9-band scoring system. Each one of these test scores is then translated into a corresponding score on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The benefit of automated scoring is that it provides consistent, unbiased results whereas IELTS and TOEFL are partly dependent on the human element in scoring, with all the subjectivity that may imply.
4. Accent
In PTE Academic and TOEFL, a standardized American accent is primarily used in the listening part. However, IELTS uses a wide range of accents including American, British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian in its listening texts.
If multilingual accents are a potential challenge, then consider opting for PTE Academic or TOEFL over IELTS.
5. Type of Writing Tasks
The type of writing tasks in each test also varies. Both IELTS and TOEFL require an essay and a task response, while PTE tasks include summarizing written text and writing an essay.
Therefore, this decision may depend on your writing preferences – those who prefer to write essays may lean more towards IELTS and TOEFL, while those who prefer summarizing might rather choose PTE Academic.
